Overview of the Host Company

Kanaria Tech is a company engaged in research and development in robotics and autonomous mobility technologies.

The company develops technologies related to robot control, sensing, and navigation using simulation environments and sensor-based systems, while also working on practical system validation for real-world applications.

Kanaria Tech combines both software and hardware development, emphasizing practical engineering processes from research and implementation to system improvement.

What kind of activities were carried out?

1. Building robotics simulation environments

Built simulation environments using ROS2, Gazebo, and Isaac Sim for navigation and teleoperation tasks.

2. Sensor integration and robot control development

Integrated sensors such as LiDAR, RGB cameras, and ZED2i with ROS2, and developed robot control and teleoperation functions.

3. SLAM and navigation system evaluation

Worked on SLAM, social navigation, and benchmarking tasks to evaluate autonomous navigation performance.

4. System integration and debugging

Configured Docker environments, debugged DDS communication issues, and worked on Jetson-based system setup and troubleshooting.

5. Robotics research and technical investigation

Conducted literature reviews on topics such as X-Mobility and Social Force Models, and explored related robotics research and implementation methods.

What achievements and learnings did you gain from participating in the internship?

  • Through hands-on experience with ROS2-based robotics systems, the interns gained a deeper understanding of practical robotics development workflows, from simulation environments to real robot integration.
  • By working on issues such as driver failures, communication errors, and SLAM instability, they improved their debugging and problem-solving skills through systematic testing and log analysis.
  • Experience with both simulation tools and hardware platforms such as Jetson Orin and various sensors helped strengthen their understanding of simulation-to-real robotics development.
  • The internship provided many opportunities for independent learning through the use of official documentation, GitHub repositories, and self-driven experimentation, highlighting the importance of proactive technical research.
  • Working in an international and research-oriented environment helped improve not only technical skills but also communication, collaboration, and adaptability through discussions and collaborative debugging sessions with team members.

Message to students considering this program

  • It is recommended to study ROS and Linux fundamentals beforehand. Familiarity with ROS nodes, topic communication, and basic Linux operations will help you adjust more smoothly during the internship.
  • Practical experience is just as important as theoretical knowledge. Having experience with sensors or small ROS-based projects can be very beneficial during both the interview and internship work.
  • A proactive learning attitude is important. Since not all information or documentation may be readily available, the ability to independently research problems using official documentation and GitHub is highly valuable.
  • Robotics development often involves both software and hardware challenges, so patience and persistence in debugging and troubleshooting are essential.
  • Taking initiative and communicating progress or difficulties clearly are important in this environment. The internship offers opportunities to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds, so actively engaging with team members can greatly enhance the learning experience.

Comments on accepting interns (from the host company)

Through this internship, I realized once again that the work we do is a very interesting field for engineering students.
The level of the students was also high. The Tokyo team had two interns working together, and one of the Kansai team talked with our company members and seemed to be working positively to solve problems.
In addition, we were able to confirm not only the students but also the education skills and teamwork of the members of our company. Techniques as engineers are important, but I think teamwork is the most important thing, so this intern gave us a good chance to rethink team formation.
